Dear friends and benefactors,

As we begin our second semester at the seminary, we are greatly encouraged by the prospect that the fruit of our labors will soon be rewarded by a successful harvest. With the latest ordination to the diaconate, we now have three deacons who have entered into their final studies before priestly ordination. These future priests will provide a much needed relief to our priests who are presently so over-extended.

As an example, besides the thousands of frequent-flier miles that Fr. Gregory and I have acquired by our flights to various Mass centers, our vehicles here in Omaha are burdened with very high mileage. Fr. Gregory’s Toyota Corolla (my old car) has approximately 270,000 miles and I have put on over 160,000 miles on my 1999 Subaru Forester within the last four years.

Although this may seem like a lot of travel, it is no comparison to the arduous journeys by horseback or by canoe of the early Jesuit missionaries in our country. The great missionary Father Peter de Smet had none of the conveniences of modem travel that we enjoy.

Nevertheless, it is with great anticipation that we look forward to the ordination of our future priests.

By your prayers and financial support, all of you, our friends and benefactors, participate in the success of the seminary; for this we cannot thank you enough!

May you have a grace-filled and properous New Year!

With our prayers and blessing,
Most Rev. Mark A. Pivarunas, CMRI
