The Morality of the Ouija Board

Dear friends and benefactors,

One misconception about life at Mater Dei Seminary during the summer months is that activities should slow down. That would be nice if it were true! However, even though our classes have ended and most of the secular seminarians have returned home, those who have remained (mostly the religious seminarians) are very active in the continual maintenance of the facilities, and our major seminarians certainly use this time for necessary review of theology and canon law. For myself there are Confirmations to administer, retreats to give, and vows ceremonies at which to officiate, in addition to the ever-increasing Mass centers that our priests and I maintain until our seminarians can be ordained to the priesthood and take up some of our load.

During this time we also hold our annual priests’ retreat (in early summer) and our bi-annual priests’ meeting (for both religious and secular clergy) in July. It is truly beneficial for the unity of the clergy to meet twice a year and to discuss at length the important issues which confront the Church today.

In the midst of our work, the seminarians, Fr. Gregory, and I do take time on occasion for recreation. This mainly consists in fishing and canoeing. During our last fishing trip, one of the seminarians caught a 30-pould snapping turtle. He was one tough fellow to handle. Needless to say, no one lost any fingers — and one of these days we will have turtle soup for lunch!

I hope and pray you will all have a spiritually and physically safe summer.

Thank you for your prayers and support!
Most Rev. Mark A. Pivarunas, CMRI
